What is ICF?

INSULATION + REINFORCED CONCRETE IN ONE WALL SYSTEM

ICF stands for Insulated Concrete Forms.

BetterBlock ICF forms are assembled to create the walls of a building. Steel reinforcement is placed within the forms, and concrete is poured into the center.

The forms remain permanently in place after the concrete cures, leaving a strong reinforced-concrete core surrounded by continuous insulation.

The result is a wall system that combines several important elements of construction into one integrated system:

FIRE RESISTANCE

Fire safety begins with the materials used to construct a building. The reinforced-concrete core of an ICF wall is noncombustible and provides substantial resistance to fire. That can help provide additional protection for occupants and property while limiting the ability of fire to move through structural wall assemblies.

BETTER MOISTURE MANAGEMENT

Heat, humidity and heavy rainfall make moisture management especially important in tropical construction. ICF eliminates many of the cavities and thermal bridges associated with conventional wall assemblies. Continuous insulation also helps control surface temperatures and reduce conditions that can contribute to condensation. Proper waterproofing, ventilation, drainage and building design remain essential with any construction system.

LESS VULNERABLE TO TERMITES

Termites can be a serious concern in tropical regions. The structural core of a BetterBlock ICF wall is reinforced concrete, rather than wood. EPS itself is not a food source for termites, although appropriate pest-management practices and detailing should still be incorporated into construction. The primary structural wall isn't something termites can eat.

ONE SYSTEM DOES SEVERAL JOBS

Conventional construction often requires separate stages for forming walls, installing insulation and completing structural components.

ICF simplifies the process. The lightweight forms are assembled into the wall configuration, steel reinforcement is installed, and concrete is placed inside the forms.

Once the concrete cures, the forms remain permanently in place as insulation.

That means the same system serves as concrete formwork + insulation + part of the finished wall assembly.

Fewer separate operations can help simplify scheduling, reduce labor steps and move a project toward completion more efficiently.

Individual masonry units are laid one at a time. Structural reinforcement, insulation and other performance improvements may require additional materials and construction stages. The completed wall depends on numerous individual blocks and mortar joints working together.
